THE DEATH OF JOHN THE BAPTIST (MATTHEW, CHAPTER 14)
2nd half of the 16th century
Hand-colored and gilded woodcut on paper, 11.6x15.7 cm, marked in the image area on the pedestal of the central column with the engraver`s initials "VS" and on the step with the illuminator`s initials "GM", mounted on cardboard. Illustration from the work Biblische Figuren des Alten vnd Newen Testaments : gantz künstlich gerissen / durch den weitberhümpten Vergilium Solis zu Nürnberg, published in Frankfurt on the Main in 1560. A completely rare print due to the signature of the illuminator, whose work is known only from a few surviving copies in world museums, historically traceable on the market only twice.
Perfect condition, later mounted on board.
