CZECH HISTORY IN THE PICTURES

1820-1834 (litography), binding later
Size 43x49 cm, 27 sheets of handmade paper with adjusted lithographs (similar dimensions app. 25.5x33.5 cm), younger hardcover. On the title illustration an allegory of Bohemia with a lion and the coat of arms of Count František Antonín Count Kolowrat-Liebsteinský, to whom the cycle is dedicated. The original notebooks with lithographs were published in 1820-1833. Antonín Machek created the lithographs in the first booklets, after which he rather supervised the younger artists who composed and lithographed the pictures. Individual illustrations were marked e.g.: "A. Manes inv. et lith.", "Druck von A. Machek in Prag", "Nach Bergler gez. und lith. von Ant. Gareis.", "Wenzl Markowsky inv. et lith.", "Anton Machek comp. lith. und gedruckt.", "Jos. Führich inv. et lith.", "Joh. Warter inv. et lith.", "Herausgegeben von P. Bohmanns Erben (und A. Machek) in Prag", "Wenzel Manes inv. et lith.", "J. Führich inv. Gareis lith.", "Leop. Friese comp. et lith.`. This is Machek`s most artistically and ideologically impressive work in the field of lithography. The whole album has 23 booklets containing 72 sheets. The first booklet was published in Vienna in 1820 as part of Machek`s training with A. F. Kunike. From the second booklet of 1822 onwards, the work (except for the last 3 leaves, which were produced by Haase and Hennig just before the dissolution in 1833) was printed by Machek`s Prague workshop with the publishing cooperation of the heirs of Peter Bohmann (active 1817-1842).
