Founded on 1 April 1896 by Albert Langen, it soon became a forum for the artistic and literary avant-garde of its time. It succeeded in attracting the best Munich editors and caricaturists; contributors included, for example, Ernst Barlach, Lovis Corinth, Käthe Kollwitz, and Alfred Kubin. Simplicissimus, originally conceived as a culturally and literarily oriented magazine, also served as a forum for all the major literary figures of its time: Frank Wedekind, the Mann brothers, Rainer Maria Rilke, Hermann Hesse, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Karl Kraus, Gustav Meyrink, etc. Publication of the magazine ended in September 1944. Binding slightly rubbed, otherwise in good condition, only a few leaves torn, soiled or with creased corners.
