HOLY-WATER STOUP

Moravia, Vyškov, probably František Witter, late 18th century
A hanging faience holy-water stoup in Rococo form, white-glazed, painted in colourful muffle colours, on the reverse a relief bust of the Virgin Mary (a saint), on the holy-water basin at the bottom a cartouche with a floral motif. The Vyškov ceramic production was here inspired by models of Holíč faience. It was precisely at that manufactory that the Vyškov painter František Witter trained in the first half of the 1790s under the head of the decorating department, Vavřinec Prath. See: K.
