Ondřej František Jakub de Waldt (1683-1752)

CONCIONES DE S. JOANNE NEPOMUCENO, GLORIOSO CHRISTI MARTYRE ET THAUMATURGO, INCLYTI REGNI BOEMIAE PATRONO

Prague, 1730
Format 8° (larger), 19.4x16 cm. [8], 699 numbered pp., [4] leaves, in Latin. Title page printed in black. Headpieces, initials, vignettes. Solid half-leather binding, spine with 4 raised bands. Printed by Jan Václav Helm in the Old Town of Prague in 1730. Ownership inscriptions on the front flyleaf. Binding torn, title page restored, ownership inscriptions on the front flyleaf, part of the Errata missing, traces of woodworm. The postil contains 31 Latin sermons on St. John of Nepomuk, written at the time of his canonization (1729). It is the author`s first printed work. The print survives in two variants, differing in the details given on the title page. The first variant states the place of publication and the printer`s name; in the second a note was added indicating where the print was sold. The printer was Jan Václav Helm, with whose work de Waldt was, however, dissatisfied - Helm did not give the preacher the text to check before printing, so it appeared with nearly 200 errors. Waldt lodged a complaint over the commission, and Helm subsequently printed an errata list, placed in the second variant after the index (Source: I. Bendová: ONDŘEJ FRANTIŠEK DE WALDT A JEHO CHVÁLOŘEČI, master`s thesis, Faculty of Arts, Palacký University, Olomouc 2011, pp. 20-21). The present copy is thus the second variant, since the verso of the last leaf carries the beginning of this Errata, the remainder of which is missing.
