Russia, Moscow around 1900 Egg-tempera painting on lime-wood board, 22,2x27 cm. Iconographic type of Hodegetria, popular in the 2nd half of the 19th century all over Russia, refers to the miraculous help during the siege of Novgorod in winter 1170. Iconographic pattern comes from the nunnery of Ponetaevka in the Lower-Novgorod region in 1860s. This icon was created probably after 1895, when Nicholas II was crowned as the tsar. On this occasion he promoted this iconographic type to the main icon of the Romanov family, so it became popular and widely worshiped especially in a higher society. Condition restored.
