PASSOVER SEDER PLATE

Bohemia, Stará Role, Schneider & Co., after 1931
Round plate divided into 7 fields in shape of a six-leaf flower. White porcelain decorated with pearl lustre with inscriptions - titles of eaten and displayed foods, marked „Karlsbad“ in the central field. This symbolical plate is used during the Jewish ritual feast of Passover (commemorating the exodus from Egypt). Traditional items on the plate are: זרוע‎‎ - zro`a – shank bone symbolizing scarified lamb; ביצה‎‎ - bejca – hard-boiled egg, symbolizing new life; מצה‎‎ - maca - maces; מרור‎‎ - maror – bitter herbs symbolizing bitterness of slavery; כרפס‎‎ - karpas – green vegetables symbolizing new spring; מים‎‎ - majim – saltwater symbolizing miracle during the crossing of the sea; חרוסת‎‎ - charoset – mixture of apples, nuts, almonds, cinnamon, ginger and wine symbolizing mortar. Ø 24 cm. Green pressed underglaze mark „JLS Made in Czechoslovakia“. Condition A.
