CHRIST ON THE MOUNT OF OLIVES

Last third of the 17th century
Oil on canvas, 54,5x51,5 cm. Christ kneeling in a dark landscape is illuminated by a strong beam of light coming from the right above, accompanying the appearance of an angel holding a chalice and comforting Christ in his mortal agony (Luke 22:39-46). This intimate work of a significant German painter active in Silesia and Bohemia was likely intended for a private art collection and contemplation by the patron, given its size and subject matter.
