Alois Petrák (1811-1888)

PORTRAIT OF A MAN IN A HAT (SELF-PORTRAIT)

1849
Oil on cardboard, 17,3x21 cm. A half-profile portrait of a young man with a mustache and a beard wearing a tall hat. Marked on the left "Petrak 1849". A sample of high-quality portrait painting from the Vienna circle. Label on the verso "Maler-Press-Cartons von Johann Hall". Framed in a period gilded frame. This is most likely a self-portrait, which Prokop Toman lists in his dictionary: "In the possession of his sister-in-law Mrs. Kulhánková, there were several family portraits, such as `Self-portrait`. Like the following item, it comes from the Kulhánek family estate. Provenance: Family collection of the Kulhánek family.
