Gebrüder Thonet

A rocking chair with a rice weave, design attributed directly to Michael Thonet. Complete, with the adjustable footrest. Bent beech wood.126 x 112 x 56 cm. Michael Thonet established the company in Vienna by transferring the Thonet company to his sons in 1853 under the new name Gebrüder Thonet. In 1856, the brothers expanded with a furniture factory in Koryčany, and in the following years, five more Central European production factories were established in Bystřice pod Hostýnem (1861), Veľké Uherce (1866), Vsetín (1867), Halenkov (1867) and Radomsko (1880). Gebrüder Thonet merged with Mundus AG in 1921 and became the world`s largest furniture manufacturer. The Thonet family bought back the shares of Thonet Mundus AG in the year 1938. After World War II, Thonet lost all its production facilities in the Eastern Bloc countries through expropriation. The sales office at Viennas Stephansplatz was destroyed during the war. Between 1945 and 1953, Georg Thonet, great-grandson of the company`s founder Michael Thonet, rebuilt the completely destroyed facilities in Frankenberg in northern Hesse, where the headquarters and production facilities of Thonet GmbH are still located today.
