Bali, late 19th century
Painting on very fine cotton canvas, 166x129 cm. An exceptionally well-painted Balinese astrological calendar depicting lunar phases and movements, arranged in a grid of 49 individual fields. Each field features various deities, wayang characters, animals, dragons, and demonic figures corresponding to each section of the calendar. Natural pigments were finally stabilized with a solution of rice starch. An outstanding example of original Indonesian art.
