MADONNA OF SVATÁ HORA
Bohemia, probably Zalány,
19th century
A folk variation of the Madonna of Svatá Hora on a low triangular plinth. The Madonna holds the baby Jesus on her left arm, supporting him with her right hand under his neck. Both figures are crowned. High relief designed for frontal view, with a flat and undecorated back. Wood with polychrome and gilding, h. 38.5 cm. On the back of the sculpture, there is a fragment of a red wax seal from a pilgrimage site with the inscription "Mons Sacer" and an image of the Madonna. Such seals were only found on statues that had come into direct contact with the original, representing only a small portion of the overall production. Stored in a wooden box with glass door and sides, 49,5x30x15 cm.
Condition C.
Missing part of the plinth, glued heads / crowns; box partially damaged by woodworm.
