Oil on wooden panel (mahogany?) with a green oil finish on the back. 25x33,5 cm. Framed. Landscape with a horseman approaching a pair of travelers sitting in the shade of a rocky shore. The contrast between the sunlit sky, already lost behind the horizon, and the darkened silhouette of the rocky shore with tree crowns creates a luminous tension, very typical of the work of this Amsterdam painter. In this particular work of cabinet character, Wouwermans' influence is still clearly evident. Signed and dated in the lower right corner, "A. v. Velde 1657."
