VER SACRUM - 1ST YEAR

1898
Book format 28,8x28,8 cm. 12 issues (1 double issue and 1 special edition). 30, 28, 24, 30, 60, 32, 32, 28, 32, 24, 22, 36 numbered pages, in German, illustr. Hardcover full-cloth binding with gold letters and color printed motif from the cover of the first issue. Issued by Vereinigung bildender Künstler Österreichs, Verlag Gerlach & Schenk in Vienna in 1898. Complete first year of the magazine of the Vienna Secession, published from 1898 to 1903. The first two years were issued monthly, with each issue dedicated to the work of a specific artist who also designed the cover. In the first year, 1898, the featured artists included Alfred Roller, Koloman Moser (the magazine`s main designer), Gustav Klimt, Rotenfeld, Alfons Mucha, and Fernand Khnopff. Its graphic design, typography, and illustration set a standard for later artistic magazines and books. Its unique square format was inspired by the Scottish Arts and Crafts movement, particularly the work of Charles Mackintosh, who became a corresponding member of the Secession. In addition to visual and graphic arts, it included music, poetry, and theater. The magazine ceased publication in December 1903, likely due to a lack of financial resources. However, its quality had been declining since 1900, when the production increased to 24 issues per year, but in a much smaller format. The unique changing covers from 1898-1899 were replaced by a recurring header. Source: https://www.theviennasecession.com/ver-sacrum/ The binding at the beginning is slightly loose, with worn edges, slightly soiled, frayed corners, torn spine, a few missing leaves; otherwise, the content is nearly complete, including covers and inserted color illustrations, overall in very good condition (only minor signs of use).
