František Kyncl (1934-2011)

PHONETIC PAINTING

1983
Acrylic on canvas 83x341 cm (86x342 cm). Strip frame. Paintings inspired by classical music were created during the 1980s and are a logical continuation of the phonetic drawings that František Kyncl had been creating since the mid-1960s in Pardubice. For these phonetic paintings, the artist built a carousel, powered by an electric motor set to the chosen optimal rotation speed. He stretched canvas on the carousel and, inspired by classical music, used a brush and spatula to open new cosmological spaces. Only few of these phonetic paintings were created, as further work in this newly discovered inspirational space was interrupted by the pain caused by illness, which often confined him to his bed, where most of his drawings were made.
