BIEDERMEIER TABLE

Austria 1820s
Table with a round top on an octagonal pedestal supported by three S-shaped curved legs, which are connected at the lower third of their height by a three-leaf stretcher. In one of the eight facets of the pedestal, there is a small drawer, likely for business cards. The body is made of softwood, fully veneered with walnut veneer, with a star-shaped marquetry design on the top. Similar delicate tables were typically used for placing a tray, on which a visitor would leave his business card (or possibly his hat and gloves) in the hall, so the butler could deliver it to the host. Diameter 56 cm, h. 75 cm. Condition B. Opalized circle in the polish of the top.
