SAINT JOHN OF NEPOMUK

Central Europe, 2nd half of the 18th century
Polychrome wood carving of chamber size depicts a saint in a richly draped robe, with a biretta on his head, standing in contrapposto with a cross in his right hand, upon which he gazes. In his left hand, also raised, he possibly originally held a martyr`s palm branch. The figure, with delicate proportions, measures 21 cm in height and is mounted on a profiled green-marbled base that is 10 cm high. Wood, polychrome, gilding. The back of both the figure and the base is flat, only roughly worked, intended for frontal viewing. Condition restored.
