MADONNA IN A FLORENTINE FRAME
around 1700
Oil on canvas 84,5x69 cm (107x95 cm). The painting depicts the frequently portrayed subject of the Sorrowful Mother of God (Mater Dolorosa) in its traditional form as a solitary half-length figure, slightly turned on a diagonal. The composition is based on a widely circulated model by the Italian painter Giovanni Battista Salvi da Sassoferrato (1609–1685). The painting is mounted in a Florentine frame composed of a pierced moulding with acanthus scrollwork in a symmetrical arrangement (19th century).
