Title page with woodcut vignette and part of the text printed in black and red. Unpaginated, in German. On the blank leaves numerous contemporary manuscript notes (account records, agricultural notes). Soft sewn binding in the original brocade wrapper. Overall good condition, consistent with age and frequent use, repaired, binding slightly damaged, showing wear. Unpaginated, in German. Title page printed in black. Engraved frontispiece (allegorical scene with an angel carrying the image of the Virgin Mary of Svatý Tomáš, protectress of Moravia, with Sts. Cyril and Methodius, and probably a personification of Moravia holding a burning heart as a symbol of love for the missionaries), headpiece and initial. Binding: contemporary brochure in gilt red brocade paper with floral décor. Published: Vienna, Ghelensche Schriften, 1771. First edition of the festive homily, delivered in April 1771 at the annual celebration of the Moravian compatriot society in Vienna. The author, Augustinian P. Norbert Anselm, in the text praises Cyril and Methodius as patrons and “good shepherds” of Moravia. Good preservation, slightly soiled and torn in places; frontispiece clean. Overall good condition, complete copy. This sermon from the 1770s is a rarely occurring example on the market of the emerging Cyril and Methodius cult in the Habsburg Monarchy outside Moravia. The frontispiece of the second work was inserted into several printed Cyril and Methodius sermons associated with the St. Michael festivities, e.g. into Arnold Zailenthal’s Lobrede auf die Heiligen Apostel und Landesbeschützer Cyrillus und Methudius des edlen Markgrafthums Mähren, Vienna, Ghelensche Schriften, 1766; into Raymund Partha’s work of the same title, Vienna, Ghelensche Schriften, 1767, VKO 18.868; or into August Bernard Kameniczky’s Wahre Einigkeit der zwey guten Hirten des edlen Marggraftums Mähren, CYRILLUS und METHUDIUS, Vienna, Ghelensche Schriften, 1770, VKO 33.518.
