In 1949 Fontana created his first "Buchi" (Perforations): he glued a piece of paper onto a canvas and pierced it from the back with several holes. Later he began to slash monochrome canvases in this way. Both sides of the canvas and the space in front of it thus became part of the work. In this way the artist allowed space to enter the painting and aligned himself with the pioneers of conceptual art.
