LANDSCAPE WITH A RUIN
end of the 18th - 19th century
Oil on linden wood, 24x30 cm (35x41 cm). Decorative frame.
A Romantic landscape with a riverside ruin and small genre staffage of riders, this work is an impressive example of 19th-century interior painting rooted in the tradition of the Southern European Romantic landscape school. The composition with a dominant tree in the foreground, soft light and historicising architecture recalls the influence of the South-Austrian or North-Italian circle, in which the idealised landscape at the foothills of the Alps became a symbol of tranquillity, nostalgia and a retreat into nature. The delicate modelling of space, warm palette and lyrical atmosphere place the work among the popular types of salon landscape painting, where the aim is not topographical accuracy, but pictorial charm and a balanced mood.
