TWO TOWN MOTIFS

Oil on wooden panel, framed, glazed. I. 12,5x21 cm (31x38,5 cm), an indistinct pencil inscription on the verso on the panel. II. 13x12,8 cm (31x38,5 cm). Small works depicting a romanticised harbour scene with picturesque architecture, typical of the period’s taste for poetic views of towns and ports of Northern Europe. The composition relies on the distinctive silhouette of half-timbered and mansard-roofed houses along the waterfront, complemented by small genre staffage of sailors and figures that bring life and period atmosphere to the scene. The painting bears the hallmarks of typical Romantic art, with an emphasis on mood, soft light, a gentle haze and a slightly idealised depiction of the place. It departs from strict topographical accuracy in favour of a painterly, evocative ambience and a sense of nostalgia for old harbour towns. Within the context of the 19th century, this was a popular motif for domestic interiors, reflecting the period’s fondness for calm, poetic and dreamy scenes with a hint of exoticism and the romantic spirit of travel. Feelings close to the human heart across time, and always relevant – especially in moments when real life seems to drift ever further away from such dreams. Condition B.
