PORTABLE ALTAR WITH THE “MADONNA DEL DITO”

Hanging “altar” made of pierced and engraved brass sheet in a Historicist design, with double-winged hinged doors, beneath which is set a porcelain plaque with a colour-painted miniature of the “Virgin with the Finger”. 27.5×17.7 cm, plaque 9.5×6 cm. Unmarked (porcelain plaque with impressed no. “33”). Images of this iconographic type, named after the finger protruding beneath Mary’s veil, derive from the well-known work of the Florentine painter Carlo Dolci (1616–1686). Condition B.
