HARBOUR WITH A FORTRESS AND SAILING SHIPS
Second half of the 17th century to the 18th century
Oil on copper plate, 15×19 cm (oval) (32×28.5 cm). Framed, unsigned.
The work shows strong parallels with the oeuvre of Johann Anton Eismann (1604–1698), who specialised in these subjects. The left part of the composition is dominated by a massive round defensive tower with adjoining buildings. In the foreground, small figures are visible and a sailing ship with a prominent mast is moored by the shore. In the background, a view opens onto the sea surface and distant mountains beneath a dreamy, slightly cloudy sky. The play of warm, diffused light evokes the atmosphere of an Italian port.
