Oil on canvas, relined, 64×88.5 cm (83×108 cm). Ornamental frame. The landscape motif with staffage displays characteristic features of the work of Ferdinand Kobell, to whom the attribution is in this case probable. F. Kobell was one of the main representatives of the so-called "ideal landscape", rooted in the Dutch Golden Age. The artist employs compositional schemes derived from the Italian landscapes of Nicolaes Berchem, which is evident especially in the typology of the figure staffage with the central motif of a white horse and in the warm palette of the setting sun. Condition C. Overall craquelure, paint flaking in several places, frame ornament damaged.
