Oil on canvas, 56×78.5 cm (64.5×87 cm). Signed lower left "T. F. Zimmermann". The work is in good condition, professionally relined and set in a modern gilded frame. Minor scratches in the varnish. The composition captures an idyllic scene of animals resting in a summer landscape beneath the canopies of mighty oaks. Zimmermann, known for his illustrations for Brehm’s Life of Animals, demonstrates here a deep understanding of animal anatomy and natural movement. The light treatment emphasising soft summer light and detailed rendering of foliage places this work among the finest examples of German animal painting.
