Oil on canvas, 94×109 cm (114×129 cm). Signed and dated left below centre "Ranftl 1834". Framed in period gilded frames. This painting by the popular Austrian dog painter forms a direct thematic and dimensional counterpart to the preceding work with dogs in an interior. While the first painting presented them in a luxurious interior, this one captures them in their natural working environment. Two Spaniels (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel breed) in a forest setting with quarry – a shot black grouse lies in the left foreground. The composition is framed by a massive tree trunk and opens into the distance on the right side. Condition B. Minor retouching, restored puncture.
