Richard Wiesner (1900-1972)

RETURN FROM WORK

first half of the 1960s
Oil on hardboard, 22×27 cm (35.5×40 cm). Signed upper left. On the verso marked with an author`s label describing the title, technique, and dimensions. An intimate figurative composition represents a typical example of Wiesner`s painterly expression, based on a free, colour-sensitive brushwork and an emphasis on the atmospheric mood of the scene. The figure of a woman, captured in a relaxed, slightly introspective pose, is conceived in broad brushstrokes that prioritise the painterly impression over detailed drawing. The colour of the painting is built on the contrast of cool blue tones of the dress with warm accents of the interior, with individual colour planes freely blending and jointly creating the overall luminous mood. Wiesner belongs to the artists of Czech Modernism who built on the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist tradition and developed it toward a distinctively conceived, expressively liberated painting. The motif of an intimate interior with a female figure is among his favoured themes, in which he concentrated on capturing an immediate mood and the psychological state of the model. Condition A.
