HANGING PLATE "ODIN"

A flat faience plate, white-glazed, in the well a polychrome-painted scene of the Germanic god Odin seated on his throne with his ravens Huginn and Muninn and wolves Geri and Freki, after an illustration from the magazine Le Magasin pittoresque, vol. XXIV, January 1856, p. 369, fig. 47, where the author of the drawing is given as "Chevignard", i.e. presumably Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard (1825–1902), French painter, engraver and decorator. Fitted with a hanging mount. Diameter 37,5 cm Unglazed "Wappenmarke", old inventory label "aus Sammlung Kaiser F. J. I. v Öst 81358300". Condition A/B. Provenance: from the collection of PhDr. Miroslav Boček (1915–2005).
