BATHING VENUS

Italy 19th/20th centuries.
Alabaster, h. 29 cm incl. low rectangular plinth. A variation of the ancient Greek statue of Aphrodite surprised while bathing, attributed to Doidals of Bithynia. Variants of this so-called "Crouching Venus" were already quite popular in antiquity. They were also represented in important royal and aristocratic collections and influenced modern sculptors since the late renaissance and mannerism. Condition B.
