Copperplate engraving on paper, 11.6x7.4 cm, signed and dated in the plate "1512 AD". Period print, trimmed without margins, minor losses and damage on the left edge, paper slightly spotted; mounted on cardboard (24.7x20.7 cm). The Engraved Passion (Kupferstichpassion, 1507–1512) was one of four major series of Dürer`s religious prints and helped establish his reputation as an outstanding Renaissance printmaker. The others were the woodcut series Life of the Virgin and the Large and Small Passions, all published in 1511. The Engraved Passion consists of fifteen small engravings and tells the story of the betrayal of Christ by Judas, His crucifixion, and resurrection. Dürer is renowned for inventing new and imaginative ways to depict scenes from Christian narratives. The Engraved Passion prints are compositionally very dramatic, intricate, and symbolically complex, with emotive contrasts of light and shadow. Unlike the more populist woodcuts, they were designed to appeal to a more exclusive market of connoisseurs and collectors.
