The banknote was hurriedly printed in Liberec on the basis of an order from the Reich Defence Commissioner of 28 April 1945 – just 10 days before the final fall of the Third Reich and Germany`s capitulation. It was intended to serve as an emergency means of payment in the encircled Sudetenland and Lower Silesia, where cash was lacking. Due to the rapid advance of the Allied armies, only a tiny fraction of pieces actually reached circulation. Most of the print run was destroyed, which makes it one of the most sought-after German emergency banknotes.
