PIETA FROM ŠAŠTÍN
Western Hungary,
19th century
Woodcarving, a folk variation of the votive statue of Our Lady of Sorrows from important pilgrimage site in Šaštín-Stráže in western Hungary (today`s Slovakia, Trnava Region). Crowned Madonna on a throne with dead body of Christ on her lap, high relief for a front view, mounted on a higher offset prismatic plinth. Wood, polychromy, gilding, total h. 27,5 cm.

Scratches, craquelure, traces of woodworm.
