PIETA FROM ŠAŠTÍN

Western Hungary, 19th century
Woodcarving, a folk variation of the votive statue of Our Lady of Sorrows from important pilgrimage site in Šaštín-Stráže in western Hungary (today`s Slovakia, Trnava Region). Crowned Madonna on a throne with dead body of Christ on her lap, high relief for a front view, mounted on a higher offset prismatic plinth. Wood, polychromy, gilding, total h. 27,5 cm. Condition D. Scratches, craquelure, traces of woodworm. Equipped with NPÚ certificate (National Heritage Board) for permanent export, NPÚ Brno 2019.
