ALLEGORY OF PAINTING
2nd half of the 18th century
Monumental painting with a seated figure of St. Luke with a brush in his right hand and a just completed icon of Madonna in his left hand and with his attribute - a book of the Gospel. The painting is based on the traditions of Italian neoclassicism, the characteristic scheme of the face refers to the work of the above-mentioned master. The allegory of painting was a popular motif. After all, Angelika Kauffmann (artist`s wife) was a member of the National Academy of St. Luke in Rome and painting societies and guilds all over Europe bore the name of Saint Luke.

Framed in rich, carved and gilt frame. Traces of later retouches, re-stretched.
