ALLEGORY OF PAINTING

2nd half of the 18th century
Monumental painting with a seated figure of St. Luke with a brush in his right hand and a just completed icon of Madonna in his left hand and with his attribute - a book of the Gospel. The painting is based on the traditions of Italian neoclassicism, the characteristic scheme of the face refers to the work of the above-mentioned master. The allegory of painting was a popular motif. After all, Angelika Kauffmann (artist`s wife) was a member of the National Academy of St. Luke in Rome and painting societies and guilds all over Europe bore the name of Saint Luke. Oil on canvas, 112x144 cm - canvas, total dimensions with frame 159x191 cm. Condition C. Framed in rich, carved and gilt frame. Traces of later retouches, re-stretched.
