Ondřej (Andreas) Zahner (1709-1752)

ASSUMPTION OF VIRGIN MARY

Moravia, Olomouc, 1730s - 1740s
A small gilded wooden sculpture depicts the Virgin Mary in a cloud, accompanied by a pair of angels carrying a crown that will be placed on her head. The iconographic representation, often seen in Italian painting of the 17th and 18th century, is based on the Catholic tradition, although it was officially codified as a church dogma in 1950. This small sculptural work was likely part of a home altar dedicated to the mystery of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (Latin: Assumptio). The original composition, possibly with illusionistic architecture, has not been preserved. However, there is a clear stylistic unity in the figure of Mary with other works by Zahner. Both the typically sharp features of the face and the distinctive layering of the drapery bear the marks of his work, as noted by Prof. Miloš Stehlík, who consulted on the matter with the owner of the work and with a representative of the auction house years ago. H. of Virgin Mary 19 cm. Box 31x49 cm. Condition A. Declared a cultural monument, index no. ÚSKP ČR: 107137.
