Book format 4°, 29.5 × 22.5 cm. 107 + 42 numbered pp., in French. Title page printed in red and black within a decorative border. Illustrated by F. Kupka under the pseudonym Paul Regnard: 23 black-and-white illustrations in the text, 20 full-page colour illustrations. Contemporary half-leather binding in red morocco with marbled paper, spine with coloured and gilt-tooled decoration and gilt lettering, top edge gilt, signed "FLAMMARION VAILLANT". Original wrappers bound in. Published by Henri Piazza in Paris in 1923 within the series L’Édition d’Art in a total edition of 690 copies, this copy being no. 386 and printed on Holland paper by Van Gelder. Very good condition, illustrations including protective tissue guards with captions, only occasional light staining to the leaves. Jean Henri Maurice Vaillant (1885–1947) was a French bookseller and bookbinder. He worked as a binder for the publisher Ernest Flammarion, his uncle. He used the signatures Flammarion and Flammarion Vaillant.
