Sturdy vellum binding, spine with 3 raised bands. Printed by Adam Petri in Basel in 1515. An important Renaissance miscellany, a collection of humanist writings, orations and essays, a fundamental study text for the humanistically educated European elite. It combines ancient wisdom, Christian morality and Renaissance rhetoric. The collection was first published in 1505 and subsequently reprinted several times in Basel, the centre of European humanism (in 1509 by Wolfgang Lachner, in 1513 by Johann Froben, and in 1515 by Adam Petri), as well as in Paris and Italy, attesting to the enormous demand among students and scholars. The vellum binding, made from an older document, is damaged and whitened; numerous manuscript annotations on the pastedowns, endpapers, title page and throughout the text; the book block is intact and, given its age, in good condition.
