Sturdy vellum binding with blind-tooled decoration, 2 clasps (surviving as fragments), spine with 4 raised bands, labels with gilt lettering. Published by Peter Quentel in Cologne in 1538. 1st edition. Slightly damaged by woodworm and damp, bindings rubbed, the book blocks in very good condition given their age, manuscript annotations in the text, ownership inscriptions on the pastedowns/endpapers. The work collects the records and acts of hundreds of general (ecumenical) and particular (local) church councils from the time of the Apostles up to the 16th century. It represents one of the first comprehensive and scholarly compiled collections of conciliar documents in history, serving as a fundamental source for canon law and ecclesiastical historiography.
