ABRAHAM AND THE THREE ANGELS, A SCENE DESCRIBED IN GENESIS 18:1-19
half of the 18th century
Oil on copper plate, 25,5x34,5 cm. he scene depicts a passage from the Bible (Genesis 18:1-18:5). The depiction of the Mamre sanctuary is not entirely typical, as it is shown not as a sacred oak grove but as an overgrown ancient temple with a classical columned facade. There is a prepared meal on the table, but the Lord is not depicted as a pilgrim but rather as one of the angels, with Abraham`s gaze fixed upon him. This exclusive work by Grund is exceptional not only for its size and the material used for the support, but also for its frame. Along with the previous item, it was likely part of some noble or religious collection of its time.
