Jaroslav Rössler (1902-1990)

PARIS II.

1958
Vintage gelatin silver print on glossy paper. 18,1x17,7 cm. Copyright credit stamp and artist`s signature in marker on the verso. This photograph dates back to 1958 when Jaroslav Rössler returned to free-form creation after an almost twenty-year pause. The photographs from this year are incredibly interesting and illustrate Rössler`s fresh and innovative approach to the photographic medium in any creative period. In this year of his return, Jaroslav Rössler created a series of photographs in which he used and reinterpreted old negatives from the 1920s. Perhaps the most famous from this series is the set of portraits of Irena Čížková, whom he photographed against a clean wall onto which he projected his abstract images from the first half of the 1920s. He didn`t just use the old negatives to make new positives from them but also created entirely new and original works with their help. The same applies to the offered photograph, where the image of the Eiffel Tower (probably from 1928) was projected at an angle onto the base, and an egg was placed on the projected image - a perfectly stereotomic object in direct contrast to the purely tectonic Eiffel Tower somewhat deconstructively referencing the work of leading surrealists, for whom the egg was a fundamental motif. This series of old-new photographs from 1958 creates a kind of imaginary bridge between the present and the past, through which Rössler deals with his pre-war work and probably nostalgia for beloved Paris. Repaired tear at the right edge approximately 5 mm, otherwise in perfect condition.
