THREE PEWTER JUGS

Bohemia, Cheb, 1st half of the 19th century
Two small pewter jugs of slightly tapering form with a moulded, beak-shaped spout, strap handle, and hinged lid with an elongated thumbrest and baluster thumbpiece. Heights 21 and 20.5 cm. The lids engraved with initials and numerals: “GR 35” and “GR 36”. On the undersides of the lids are Cheb pewterers’ marks, probably the mark of master A. G. (see E. Hintze, Die deutschen Zinngießer und ihre Marken, vol. 4: Schlesische Zinngießer, Leipzig 1926, no. 1311). Together with: a tall pewter jug of barrel-shaped form with a flat hinged lid and strap handle, decorated at the top and bottom with simple linear banding. The lid is fitted with a handle and a sliding mechanism for closing the jug. On the underside of the lid an illegible pewterer’s mark, and on the top side engraved initials “B.Ž.” Height 27.5 cm.
