FOUR PEWTER TANKARDS

Bavaria, Bohemia, mostly 19th century
Pewter tankard of barrel-shaped form on a circular base, with an S-shaped strap handle, stepped hinged lid and baluster thumbpiece. The body is decorated at the upper and lower edges with moulded rings. Height 22 cm. Mark inside the lid “A. Neidhart Feinzinn”. Smaller plain tankard with simple triple-line decoration and a lid bordered with a band of foliage, fitted with an acorn-shaped thumbpiece and engraved inscription “A: Wunschel. / 2.” On the base a pewterer’s mark of Johann Adam Friedrich Hohenner (E. Hintze, Die deutschen Zinngießer und ihre Marken, vol. 7: Süddeutsche Zinngießer. Tauberbischofsheim to Zwiesel. With appendix: Alsace, Austria, Switzerland, Hungary, Leipzig 1931, p. 93, no. 571) and “Probzinn Wunsiedel.” Height 14.8 cm. Barrel-shaped tankard with line decoration and a lid with decorative thumbpiece and engraved initials “Ch. K. / 1”. Marked on the hinge “1/20 L” and on the underside of the lid “Prob Zinn”, with the town mark of Cheb and maker’s mark “J. Becker”. Height 16 cm. Pewter tankard with hinged lid, thumbpiece in the form of a male head in a turban. Height 21 cm. Lid broken off at the hinge. Condition B-C.
